Vincent Yong

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Vincent Yong, challenged since birth, was born with a congenital Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), aka Hole-in-the-heart but that and the doctor’s advice did not stop him from living the active life he sought. He turned his VSD into a Very Strong Desire to pursue life. Perhaps that was what got him to this world where he was supposed to be initially aborted.

Without much parental guidance (dad wasn’t around and mum was working) and the lack of emotional support a child needed in his growing years, he soon learned to be his own lighthouse and found guidance through keen observation, listening and tuning into his instincts. He excelled in sciences and studied Engineering but quit in the final year when dance came into his life. He took up proper dance training full-time in a college after winning the second place in a group dance competition. He managed to get himself through the education without support from his family in this unknown path of pursuit. Having no prior training, he graduated as the Most Outstanding Student of his faculty and also became the top graduating student. Vincent was awarded the SIA Award of Excellence in the Arts and served his country in the National Service assisting in the choreography and instruction for the mass display performances during the National Day Parades.

A scholar of the SHELL-NAC, Vincent went on to become the first Singaporean to graduate from the prestigious CODARTS University for the Arts in The Netherlands where renowned performers for top dance or performing companies in the world are trained. He had training and practiced Yoga, Pilates, and dabbled in Aikido besides being a passionate drummer and representing the prize-winning table-tennis team when he was in his primary school.

When his mother passed just 6 months after he returned from The Netherlands, Vincent’s only support and reason to live came from his lecturing work in the college and instruction in the gym. Seeking deeper meaning, he founded his company, Danspire International, in 2009 bringing dance and movement learning into a wider audience using them as a therapeutic tool as he coached the holistic integration of body, mind, emotion and purpose while communicating the value of personal development. With his experience in movement, dance, fitness and life-coaching, he was invited to be in the team to design the first Dance Movement Therapy and Western Mind-Body Practice courses in Singapore approved to be taught in Singapore.

With over 15 years in the field of dance and movement, Vincent became Singapore’s first Certified Movement Analyst (CMA) from Laban/ Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS) approved by American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), a Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist (RSME/T) approved by the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA), a BodyMind Dancing® Teacher, a Cancer Exercise Specialist and certified Moving For Life Dance Exercise for Health® Instructor, a certified Master Practitioner of Neuro- Linguistic Programming by American Board of Neuro- Linguistic Programming (ABNLP), a practitioner of Time Line Therapy®, certified instructor for TRX® Suspension Training and a certified Zena-Rommette Floor-barre® teacher holding a Bachelor’s degree in Dance.
